The Stephan Pyles Culinary Scholarship Corporate, Individual, and Memorial Scholarships
The Foundation, through its fundraising activities and development programs, is positioned to provide grants, fellowships and scholarships to deserving and meritorious individuals, organizations and institutions that qualify under the rules and guidelines established by The Foundation’s Board of Directors.
The Foundation not only accepts applications for such grants, but also seeks out those who represent the high standards of excellence and performance of The Foundation. In recent years, The Foundation has provided Texas A&M University a grant for the study of Pearce’s Disease, a disease that attacks grape vines. It has also founded the Stephan Pyles Scholarship, an annual award to aid and assist outstanding young culinary artists in furthering their education and training.
The Stephan Pyles Culinary Scholarship
“This scholarship is an opportunity to showcase the best and brightest of culinary talent in Texas. We are investing in up-and-coming new chefs with the expectation of lifelong achievement ensuring that the culinary arts continue to flourish.” – Stephan Pyles
One of the premiere culinary scholarships in the country, the Stephan Pyles Culinary Scholarship honors renowned Texas chef, author and entrepreneur, Stephan Pyles. Recognized internationally as one of the founding fathers of Southwestern cuisine and recently named “Chef of the Year” by Esquire magazine, Pyles has lent his name and reputation to this prestigious $15,000 scholarship awarded annually to a rising culinary artist.
Scholarship applicants must be enrolled in culinary school. Winners are selected through a rigorous application process and cooking competition which takes place in San Antonio each spring.
Congratulations to the 2006 Stephan Pyles Culinary Scholarship Winner: Carolyn Bream
Before moving to Texas to pursue a degree in applied science at Le Cordon Bleu, Texas Culinary Academy, Carolyn Bream earned her bachelors degree in theatre and dance at James Madison University. Using the experience she gained working for restaurants in New York City and the Czech Republic, Bream competed in, and won, the Stephan Pyles Celebrity Chef Cook-Off in March 2006, walking away with a $15,000 culinary scholarship. Bream is currently working for Chef Pyles at his Dallas-based restaurant, Stephan Pyles, as part of her externship. Her planned graduation date is December 2006.
Congratulations to the 2005 Stephan Pyles Culinary Scholarship Winner: Jodie Liwanag
A recent culinary graduate of the Art Institute of Houston, Jodie is currently working on completing her baking and pastry degree.
Cooking is Jodie’s passion and she works as a chef instructor of the Central Market cooking school in Houston. Her dream is to eventually tour France and Italy and return to the states to open her own bakery.
Jodie moved to Texas from California and hopes to one day study in France to learn more about French culinary techniques. Jodie’s award-winning menu consisted of a roasted peach pizza with goat-cheese and rosemary, and a veal purse with grilled quail stuffing and madeira reduction sauce. For her dessert, Jodi impressed judges with a chipotle chocolate cake with cinnamon ganache.
