A large part of the The Wine & Food Foundation of Texas’ mission is to challenge, nurture and develop future chefs. Culinary scholarships are one of the many ways in which the Foundation accomplishes this goal.
The Foundation is proud to host two scholarships each year. The first is the Stephany Pyles Scholarship Cook-Off Competition. Named for Texas culinary legend Chef Stephan Pyles, known as one of the founding fathers of Southwestern cuisine, the Stephan Pyles Culinary Scholarship is a tribute to his remarkable contribution to the culinary arts in Texas.
This scholarship challenge fosters the drive, passion and imagination in student chefs, thus furthering Texas’ great culinary legacy. It is challenging, demanding and requires skill, imagination and drive. The competition is rotated between culinary schools throughout the state and is judged by a number of Texas chefs and culinary experts each year, including Chef Pyles.
The second scholarship is the Pastry Scholarship Competition, which was lauched in 2008 with celebrity guest judge Chef Mark Chapman of the Cookie Lounge in Austin. Each year the scholarship features a new celebrity guest judge who has made significant contributions to the industry. **Please note, the 2012 Pastry Competition is on hold until 2013. Thank you.**
The competition requires applicants to utilize a pre-determined ‘basket’ of ingredients to create recipes for five pastry categories including a composed dessert, a traditional Texas dessert, a standard technique dessert, a mignardises plate, and a basic yeast bread.
Both scholarships are open to all Texas students currently enrolled in an accredited culinary program.
